What is Rotary?
Rotary is a volunteer organization of over 1.2 million business and professional leaders worldwide. They provide humanitarian services to less fortunate segment of societies and help build goodwill and peace. About 32,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas conduct projects to address today’s challenges — including illiteracy, disease, hunger, poverty, lack of clean water, and environmental concerns — while encouraging high ethical standards in all vocations. PolioPlus is Rotary’s flagship program. By the time polio is eradicated, Rotary club members will have contributed US$850 million and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than two billion children in 122 countries. Rotary is a spearheading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, along with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Founded in Chicago in 1905 as the world’s first volunteer service organization, Rotary quickly expanded around the globe. Today, club members meet weekly to plan service projects, discuss community and international issues, and enjoy fellowship. Clubs are nonpolitical and open to every race, culture, and creed.
Rotary club of Faisalabad was chartered in 1953 under the leadership of Mian Fazal-e-Ahmad. At that time all clubs of Pakistan and India were part of District 310. There were only five clubs in Pakistan. In 1957 the first District Governor of District 310 from Pakistan was elected from Rotary Club Faisalabad. This is the greatest honor for our Club. Now-a-days the membership is more than 75. During all those 57 years, the club has sponsored many projects partially or fully and handed them over to the relevant organizations. Recent projects are provision of Benches and Desks, Uniforms to all students, rations to orphan student and above all construction of Class Rooms in Government Girls School, X-Block, Madina Town, Faisalabad. Another major project was provision of Brail Printer, Typing Machines and Calculators to Al-Faisal Blind Centre (Markaz Nabina) Faisalabad, under Rotary Matching Grant. Moreover, Rtn. Major Shahnawaz provided funds to renovate the auditorium, gallery, two computer labs and also refurbished all the computers in the centre. TB Hospital was provided with 30 benches, four desert coolers, electric insect killers, deep freezer and X-Ray Machine. Another landmark project is the adoption of a government owned school, which was being run under the trees. Rotarian Major Retd. Shahnawaz adopted Government Khursheed Primary School, Batala Colony, Faisalabad. This was a private school which was nationalized by Government and started conducting classes under the trees as it had no building of it’s own. Later one compound of an abandoned school was given to them. School was got vacated from encroachers, renovated the whole building, bench and desks purchased for each student, three wash rooms constructed, clean cool drinking water made available, play area developed for children. Incurred an expenditure of rupees 1,500,000/= and it has now become a model school and student strength has increased from 125 to 250.
